Hello. My name is Dr. Jennifer Casandra Williams Herring. I hail all the way from the state of Texas, born and raised half of my life in Florida, moving to Texas and doing my undergraduate and graduate degrees at the University of North Texas. I have a PhD in Curriculum and Instruction with a minor in Educational Administration. I developed this course and have been teaching it for several semesters at the University of Illinois at Springfield, including also teaching the course at the University of North Texas. From a family of nine children, I have a brother who had experiences with Special Education in K-12. He has a learning disability, but fares quite well as an adult now. We do not treat him as someone 'special,' but as a productive member of our family, an individual with his own needs, as we all have our own needs. He is a favorite brother of mine, someone whom I enjoy communicating with as much as with anyone else.
Some of you I have taught in other courses. I look forward to your introductions, though, as this is an online course, most of our communication will be via this blog and email. So, let your classmates and me know who you are. Comment to this post with a one-two paragraph introduction of yourself . Include in the introduction a discussion of your background, family and why you chose to be in the teaching profession. If you have an experience to share concerning a childhood exception, feel free to share that if you wish.
If you do not have a Google account and have not uploaded a photo in that account, then go to google.com, click on Sign In and set up an account, upload a photo in your profile for free. Once you've done that, come back to this blog and post your introduction; a photo from the google account should automatically show each time you comment to the blog postings. Post by Saturday, January 22, midnight.
Looking forward to meeting you!
Dr. Herring

ReplyDeleteHello! My name is Sarah Dame. I have lived in Central Illinois all of my life, and come from a rather large family, having 5 siblings. I graduated from Williamsville High School in 1998, LLCC in 2000 (A.S., Business Administration), and UIS in 2004 (B.B.A. Business Administration). I have been married for a little over 10 years now, and have two beautiful daughters, ages 6½ and 9. I chose to become a stay-at-home mom after the birth of my first daughter, and began substitute teaching 5 years ago in our local school district because it offered great flexibility. My experiences as a substitute have inspired and motivated me to obtain my secondary teacher certification in the areas of math and business education (both of which are subjects I thoroughly enjoy). Furthermore, I feel that a career in teaching will be the perfect fit for me and my family as it will allow me to share (somewhat) the same schedule with my girls.
ReplyDeleteHi! My name is Bailey Beale. I am from Independence, Missouri (about 5 hours west of here) and stay here on campus because I am a member of the UIS basketball team. I have always been involved in sports and love all the characteristics I have gained from playing them. I have a wonderful golden retriever, Junior, that stays at home with my dad while i'm at school. I am working towards my math education degree and also want to coach high school. I would like to teach middle school because I love that age group and they are still trying to define who they are and will get to see them grow into themselves each day. I have always known that I was going to grow up and be a teacher since I was a little kid. I have had great teachers in the past that have inspired me to become one so that I can share my knowledge with adolescents and help shape their lives in a positive way.

ReplyDeleteHello! My name is Mona Iehl. I am originally from Michigan where I was born and raised. I received my teaching degree at Central Michigan University. I moved to Chicago 2 1/2 years ago to begin my teaching career. I started out on Chicago's south side in a 2nd grade classroom. I spent 2 months starting my classroom, when I was suddenly given a 1/2 split classroom. I finished my first, challenging, year feeling tired but very successful. However, I was met with a lay off notice. I luckily made many contacts my first year and landed my dream job at Polaris Charter Academy that summer. I now teach a 1st and 2nd grade multiage classroom. I face "exceptional" children daily, in many ways and on occasions. I am here to fulfill a deficiency in my certification from Michigan to Illinois. I'm very excited to see how this class will help me understand the challenges my students and I face each day as we navigate the road to learning for each individual student.
ReplyDeleteOh yes- I went into teaching to live the dream. I feel like I do it daily. Despite all the hard work, head aches, and heart aches. Each day, I feel fulfilled and so lucky to spend time helping students become successful members of a community.
Excited to start this journey with you all! :)
~Mona
***I posted before, but it no longer appears in the comments, so forgive me if it reappears and this is redundant.
ReplyDeleteI am Justin Brennan. I am 30 years old. I graduated Penn State University in 2003 with simultaneous BS and MS degrees through the Schreyer’s Honors College in Civil and Environmental Engineering, with emphasis on Structural Engineering. I have been a licensed professional engineer in the State of Illinois for a few years. I currently work full time as a forensic structural engineer. My job typically involves determining what caused a structure to fail. I mainly provide consulting for the insurance industry. My job essentially is event driven.
I am enrolled here at UIS to obtain my secondary education certificate for mathematics. This is my third semester in the program. I am entering into the teaching profession because I just do not feel that I am doing anything significant to contribute to society as an engineer. I find that the rewards in engineering are hard to come by and quickly fleeting. I want to help young men and women find their voices and bring out the best in them. I also find that my greatest mentors, outside of my father, have been teachers or professors.
I live in Plainfield, Illinois, which is north of Joliet. I have been married for 2 years and my wife and I have a 6 week old daughter. My wife Brandy is a real resource in regard to special education because she has worked both in both public and private education settings, has been a part of several different school districts, has held several different types of positions in the special education field (classroom teacher, resource teacher, and now an interventionist), and has worked with students of varying ages and needs.
Outside of school and work, I am a huge Penn State football fan and am a season ticket holder. I also enjoy car detailing and astronomy.
My name is Matt Wirig. I graduated from York High School in Elmhurst, IL in 2000. Since then, I received my BS in Finance with a minor in history from University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign in 2003 and my JD from Notre Dame Law School in 2006. I've been working as an attorney in Chicago since 2006 (focusing my practice on structuring investment companies and dealing with compliance issues for investment companies/investment advisers/broker-dealers). I've participated in tutoring programs since elementary school and have always gotten a charge out of being a part of (and watching) others progress in their studies. Over the past four years, I've found the 2 hours a week that I spend working at the Chicago Lights tutoring program to be the highlight of my week and I would like to direct the 50-60 hours I currently spend working as a lawyer towards those teaching efforts. While I anticipate this transition period while I’m getting the training I need to become a teacher while still working as an attorney will be challenging, I’m fortunate to have a wife (of 4 months), family and friends who are very supportive of this move and (I hope) will understand that the next couple of years will be busy while I work towards this dream.
ReplyDeleteI’ve been really looking forward to this course since I first saw it in the program curriculum. As a tutor I worked for about two years with a student with autism. While overwhelming at times (and particularly in the early months of working with him), it was tremendously rewarding and I would have benefited greatly with a little more information/training about working with exceptional children. On a personal level, I have both an aunt and uncle with “severe to profound” mental retardation. Neither participated in any kind of standard education curriculum but instead have attended programs run by the Ray Graham Association (headquartered in Lombard, IL) which runs really exception programs for individuals and the families of individuals with special needs. Finally, as a lawyer, it is a very interesting area of education. While legal issues pervade every part of education, it is particularly evident in looking at the IDEA. “Simple” legislative concepts quickly become nuanced and complicated when you start looking at the many cases that have been decided in a range of ways in different juridictions.
While I don’t expect to have a lot of free time over the next year and a half, I hope to spend much of that free time continuing to work with students (tutoring and working in after-school programs), hiking, playing/watching sports (I’m a Bears season ticket holder so this is a particularly big Sunday for me), reading and watching movies with my wife. I’m very excited to be moving one of my hobbies (tutoring) to my career in (if all goes well) just over a year and a half.
My name is Zach Reed. I grew up and graduated from Carthage High School in 2005. I received a BS from Illinois College in 2009. I have one brother, who is a teacher in Athens Illinois, my father is a principal at Camp Point Central High School, and my mother is a nurse at Dot Foods.
ReplyDeleteI feel as if I have always wanted to be a teacher because it gives you an opportunity to coach. As I stated earlier both my father and brother are in education, so it also kind of runs in my blood. I hope to one day have to opportunity to teach history at the middle school level and coach football.
I am 28 years old. I currently volunteer in the ER at Memorial hospital. I went to school at Pittsfield, IL and graduated in 2002. I then went to WIU until 2005 where I transfered to Illinois College and graduated in 2007 with a BS in biology. I enrolled in the master's biology program at UIS, which should be done this spring. I have been substitute teaching for almost a year where I grew up. I was also recently hired as head track and field coach at my old high school. My entire family is in education. My mother is a counselor and my father is a superintendent. My sister is student teaching this semester in Bloomington.
ReplyDeleteI chose to go into teaching because I look back at my own education and realize that I wasn't prepared for higher education. I want to motivate not only to perform well, but be passionate about their academics. I feel that if students are truly passionate about their pursuits then they will excel in life.
Hello, I'm Brittany Gregory. I grew up in Gillespie, a small town about 45 minutes south of Springfield, and graduated from the local high school. I come from a rather large family. I have 7 siblings but we are very spread out in ages. I am also engaged and I am getting married in May!
ReplyDeleteMy dream has always been to become a teacher. My older sister is a teacher, and I always wanted to follow in her footsteps. My brother who is closest in age to me has a learning disability and was in some special needs classes in school, so I am somewhat familiar with different aspects of special needs students in the classroom. I have also taken this course at a different university, but it did not transfer. For that class, I had 20 hours of field experience in special needs classroom, which was a very meaningful experience. This semester, I look forward to expanding my knowledge of working with exceptional children!
Hello! My name is Cecil Crawford. I am a native of Springfield and have lived here for about half my lifetime. I graduated from Lanphier High in 1994 and started my college experience at the U of I in Champaighn right after. I started a family while in school and had to stop going to work fulltime. I work for Menards in Springfield and have been with the company for 14 years and counting. I have been in 6 different cities with Menards around the midwest. I moved back to Springfield in 2008. I am a proud father of 4 and an assistant football coach at Lanphier High.
ReplyDeleteWhen I stopped going to school originally, I was planning on becomming a teacher. After working in the retail business after all this time, the desire to want to have a positive impact on young minds was still there. After spending a few years coaching at the high school, I realized that my time would be better spent shaping the minds of our future than what I am currently doing. I decided to try to pick up where I left off in college and get my degree and teaching certification.
My name is Ken Pease. My family moved to the Springfield area a little over a year ago from Tallahassee, Florida where we lived for over 13 years. I am married, have 2 beautiful children, and a dog. I am currently working as a graphic artist, a painter, an instructor with the Lincoln Land College for Kids program, and the Gallery Preparator at the UIS Visual Arts Gallery.
ReplyDeleteI have a degree in Commercial Art and Advertising, and a degree in Art Education that I received over 15 years ago. Since my student teaching experience, I have been working as a full time graphic artist. When my family decided to move to Illinois, I felt that it was time to use my art experience and my teaching degree to share art with kids. I believe that creativity is in every child, and I look forward to learning how to better share that experience with exceptional students.
Hello my name is Shellie Sylvia and hear is my brief Bio...
ReplyDeleteI am the youngest of 4 girls. Two of my older sisters are teachers – one is an English Professor in Chicago at a Community College (also working on her PhD) and the other one is doing her student teaching this semester and will then be a special education teacher. My other and oldest sister is studying massage therapy to become a massage therapist. I guess we are children that never stop going to school, considering my oldest sister is 34 and I am 28. We all have been to college before now, our degrees are…
1. 3 Associate Degrees
2. 4 Bachelor Degrees
3. 2 Master Degrees (will be 2 when my sister is done with her student teaching)
4. 1 Culinary Certificate in Baking and Pastry
5. Massage therapy certificate
6. And when I am finished add Teaching Certificate with endorsements in Math
7. And eventually a PhD too
My parents are both nurses, my mom is a NICU nurse for 35 years now and my dad is an Orthopedic nurse for 25 years now. So I guess you can say that our family is in the servant professions. I come from a household that strived for the best and encouragement to succeed in whatever you want to do as long as you try – ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE. Family is the most important thing to me without these people I would not be able to have what I have or be happy like I am.
Beside my sisters and parents I have my own family. I have been married for 3.5 years and we have 2 wonderful children. Jack is going to be 5 on February 19th and Emmie will be 1 on February 20th. My parents are the biggest helpers, as they watch my 11 month old every day while I am at work and 2 days a week they have both of the kiddos.
We have also recently just purchased our first house and gutted it and then moved in last year after the 4 month remodel.
I have my bachelor’s degree in Business Management which I earned from UIS in 12/2007. I work full time, go to school full time, and of course am a full time mother. My life is really busy and I don’t see this getting any slower only busier as the kids get older. But I wouldn’t change it for the world.
I want to become a math teacher because I want people to be able to achieve an understanding of math that I have in my life. I have siblings that do not understand or just “get” math like I do and I want to share and teach children how to better understand math. It is not a hard subject if you have a good teacher.
Hello! My name is Kady Carter (though still listed as Bloodworth through UIS). I recently got married to my high school sweetheart in October and am still settling into married life. My husband and I have one dog who is more like our daughter than an animal. I live in central Illinois but have lived in many other states such as California and Alaska since my dad was in the military. I am huge on travel and enjoy any road trip I can take.
ReplyDeleteI am currently a History major with a minor in Teacher Education, but we'll see how that goes. My true love is History and I eventually would like to teach History because a lot of students today do not have a great appreciation for our nation's history. I think the secrets and unknown territories of our nation are the most interesting and I look forward to introducing those to students some day.
I am very interested in this class and can't wait to get started. I am also excited that it is an online class since that is the easiest way for me to learn. I know that this class will help me in my future and it is great to meet others that are on the same path as myself.
My name is Charles Collings and I have lived in Chicago for 10 years. I’m originally from Maryland but most of my family is from Massachusetts. I have an undergrad degree from Providence College in Rhode Island and lived in Boston for 7 years after college. I have just entered the TEP in order to become a secondary math teacher. This is a career change for me from the world of corporate software business development and sales. I have always loved math and sold statistical software (SPSS) for a long time. I also really like working with and positively influencing kids, and since my corporate career wasn’t really doing it for me I decided to become a math teacher. I am an only child and my Mom and Stepdad live a few blocks from me here in Chicago. My Dad still lives in Maryland. I’m pretty active – I play drums in a band, play coed rec softball, and competed in the Chicago Triathlon last summer.
ReplyDeleteLooking forward to a great semester…
Hello, my name is Ashley Head and I have lived in Rochester, Illinois all of my life. I graduated in 2007 and started at UIS that fall. I am on track to student teach in Spring of 2012 and I can't wait to be able to say that I have a teaching degree. I am majoring in English with a minor in Secondary Education. I chose this career path, because I wanted a job that meant something to me and made me happy. I wasn't sure that teaching was wanted at first, but when a friend of mine said I would be a great teacher; I pursued it. I think teaching is what I was meant to do, and I'm striving to make it possible. I chose English, because I love reading and writing. I also think English is one of the few subjects you absolutely must be taught. If you cannot speak eloquently or write without error, then your chances of getting a job go down by a lot.
ReplyDeleteCurrently, I work at Silverleaf Children's Academy in Rochester where I am a before and after school teacher for ages 8 to 12. I love it there, and I find myself challenged everyday. I think the experiences at the center help me prepare for experiences later on. For instance, I know how to speak with parents and manage a classroom. At the center, I teach the kids and do projects with them, so it holds similarities to what I will be doing in the future.
I am really excited about this semester!
Hello.
ReplyDeleteMy name is Patrick Grafton. My wife and I are the parents of three daughters. Our youngest is in her senior year of high school. Her two older sisters are licensed registered nurses. We have been blessed with five grandchildren, three girls and two boys. My home is located in Tovey, Illinois, a small town located near Sanchris Lake. I enjoy the simpler things in life, like watching the sunset, playing my guitar, and playing with my grandchildren.
I graduated from UIS, in May of 2001, with a Bachelors of Arts in Communications. Shortly after I graduated my oldest granddaughter was born. She was born with cerebral palsy, she quickly became my hero! I watched as she fought to do things that others take for granted, like walking down a flight of stairs, simply rotating her wrist, pinching with her thumb and pointer finger, or simply being able to talk. I am glad to say that she has been victorious. She is my inspiration.
My career as an educator began in December of 2008, when I started working as a substitute teacher for South Fork School District 14. I did not have an inner calling to teach, but rather a desire to earn money. However, something happened after my first few assignments, I discovered I love teaching, especially students in special education. I am currently employed by Mid-State Special Education as a paraprofessional. I work with high school students who have learning disabilities. I am looking forward to this course. My goal is not only to earn a grade of an “A,” but to become a more effective as educator.
Hi everyone! My name is Tammi Bowman. I live in Springfield with my two sons, Caleb 15, Cody 14 and my Yorkie, Grizzly. I enjoy working out, running, vacationing and watching my boys play sports. Caleb and Cody keep me really busy so I don’t have a lot of free time!
ReplyDeleteI retired from the Army, October 31, 2010, with 24 years of service as a Chief Warrant Officer 4 and I was the Property Book Officer for the Illinois Army National Guard. I already had my Bachelor’s Degree so I decided to get my teaching certificate from UIS. I started working on my teaching certificate part time in the Fall of 2008 and I am going to school full time this semester. I also started subbing last August for District 186 grades K-8.
I want to be a teacher because I love kids, I wanted my second career to be fun yet challenging and I want to make a difference in a child’s life.
Hi my name is Devynn Allen. I am 21 years old and have lived in Springfield all my life. I have three siblings (two sisters and one brother) and my oldest sister passed when I was 5. I currently do not have any kids. However, I would like a few before its all said and done. I was raised primarily by my mom but my dad is involved in my life as well.
ReplyDeleteThere is no one in my immediate family in college so this experience was new for my family and I when I started. I am currently in my fourth year with plans of student teaching next spring. I have known since I was about 14 that I wanted to be a teacher. I have always wanted a job that could help people, especially young people. I feel that teaching is the best way for me to accomplish that goal. I have also chosen to be a math teacher simply because math is my best subject. I have aspirations of becoming a guidance counselor or a professor once I can get my higher education.
Hi! My name is Sheri. I am from Athens Illinois but moved to Springfield with my husband this year. I have two puppies, Tootsie and Lily, and two kittens, Athena and Leo. I got my associates from LLCC. I am a double major in Math and English hoping to teach high school. This semester I am officially a super-senior, but will *fingers crossed* graduate next year in time to teach in fall 2012. I then plan to take classes at night to get my masters and then hopefully my PHD eventually.
ReplyDeleteI have always wanted to be a teacher for as long as I can remember. I love school, always have, and want to let other kids experience school the way I did, not as a burden, but as a place that can be fun.
Hello! My name is James Holzer, however I go by Jamie. I currently live in Salem, IL with my wife Ericka and our five dogs. I graduated from Elk Grove High School in 1993 and went to Eastern Illinois University. Shortly after my freshman year, I sustain a spinal chord injury and landed me in a wheelchair. After that, I took a year off from school to focus on physical therapy and returned to Harper College where I received an Associates of Arts Degree in pre-business. I then went to Northern Illinois University where I graduated with a Bachelors of Science degree in mechanical engineering. After graduating I spent 5 years designing power plants and another 5 years in an engineering related position. Upon getting married and relocating from Chicago, I decided it was the perfect time to change careers and pursue teaching.
ReplyDeleteTeaching math is something I’ve always wanted to do, preferably at the high school level. In fact, I should have pursued teaching instead of engineering. Don’t get me wrong, engineering is a wonderful profession, I just didn’t feel it was as fulfilling as I would like. I look forward to being a positive influence in the lives of our youth. I want to help kids realize their potential and I want them to know what it is like to succeed. If I’m lucky, I’ll get the chance to help them to experience both.
Hello, My name is Jason Warren and I am getting my teaching certification in secondary social science. I just recently moved to Springfield from Decatur so I could avoid the daily commute for work and school. I received my Bachelor of Fine Arts in Dec 2004 from Southern Illinois University in Carbondale. I had always thought of becoming an Art teacher and finally decided to go for it, although UIS doesn’t yet have an art education degree so I went with my other passion (history). After obtaining my certification I can apply for an endorsement in Art as well as my history endorsement…then I’ll be twice as likely to find a position I love.
ReplyDeleteGrowing up, a good friend of mine had a sister with mental retardation. Even though she had grown up with this condition, she still went to school, had a part time job and had a great joy of life. This showed me that no matter who you are or what life has dealt you, you should always live for today and enjoy everything you do. I want to bring this idea into my teaching and show students how fun school actually can be.
My name is Sheri Bettis and I live in the city of Normal with my husband of 17 years, our son and daughter, and our Corgi named Toby. Upon completion of my degree I hope to be a secondary teacher of English and currently am also a published writer. I also have a background in business, math, and psychology so we will see what happens. I may wear all of these hats as I intend to work at a private Christian school in the area.
ReplyDeleteAfter high school—back in 1990, I started college as an accounting major at ISU but realized I was too social to be happy in this field. Then, I decided to be a teacher but I was so long into school already that I chose to take a business degree in order to graduate sooner. I worked for some years at State Farm and then quit to stay home with my first born. In order to bring in an income I opened an in-home daycare for part time needs. After 11 years of this and always wishing I had stayed in college for the teaching degree the first time, I decided I could still have my cake and eat it too so I’m back to get my teaching certification now.

Hello classmates! My name is Emily Arnold. I'm currently living in the Springfield area with my two orange tabby cats and working as a pharmacy technician. I grew up in Quincy and also lived in the Champaign area for about 8 years. I received my B.S. in Computer Science from the UIUC College of Engineering. I also completed a few semesters of medical school but decided that that was not the career for me! I'm now working towards certification for secondary math. This is partly due to necessity (I need a real job!), but also fits well with my desire to help people. In medicine, geriatrics was one of my main interests since the elderly are often "forgotten" and need advocates to assist and protect them. I think being an advocate for children is part of any teaching position (and especially important for children with special needs).
ReplyDeleteHello everyone, my name is Mike Williams. I currently reside in Herrin, IL, about three hours southeast of Springfield. I have a beautiful fiancee, Ashley, and together we have created the cutest little boy in the entire world, S.J. My current jobs include working as a substitute teacher, a full-time stay-at-home dad, and obviously, a busy, online college student.
ReplyDeleteI earned my bachelor's degree in political science from the University of Southern Indiana in 2005. I also attended Murray State University for the first two years of college. I was initially enrolled in the teacher education program at USI but I decided to get my political science degree instead. I have regretted that decision ever since. So, I enrolled at UIS to finally fulfill my dream of becoming an educator.
After college, I worked as an intern for the Indiana State Senate. It was a tremendous opportunity and experience. I discovered a great interest in government and I hope to again one day grace the halls of a statehouse or possibly even Washington D.C. After the internship, I worked in sales up until last fall when I became unemployed. I am definitely ready to begin a real career and I am confident education is the right path for me.
I became interested in education while working as an assistant basketball coach for my brother's high school team in 2003. I discovered that I had the ability to have a positive impact on the lives of youth and I really enjoyed the experience. I wish I would have had the determination to become an educator earlier than now. I suppose I still needed time to mature myself before I began teaching others. I am intrigued and excited to begin my teaching career.
Dear Class:
ReplyDeleteNice to meet all of you! I'm looking forward to interacting with you as well. What I will be doing is sending you individual emails as the class interaction component.
I did notice that a few of you did not post a photo of yourself. A grade has been given for the photo/introduction uploads; if you did not post a photo, points deducted will be restored when you add the photo. Too, if you posted a photo with more than yourself in it, on your next posting, please identify everyone in the photo.
Again, I look forward to working with you this semester.
I am currently stuck in Washington D.C.'s Reagan International Airport on my way to a board meeting in Greensboro, NC. I can still be reached at the contact information given to you in the syllabus.
Sincerely,
Jennifer Herring, PhD
Here is my picture. For some reason it doesn't show up in my original post and I can't figure out how to add it to that post.

ReplyDeleteCharles, I had the same problem. I added a photo to my profile and it does not appear on the original blog comment.
ReplyDeleteEveryone should be able to see my photo now. It was a picture taken on my wedding day, so the woman the photo is obviously my wife, Ericka.
It is nice to meet all of you!
Don't know why my picture did not post last time

ReplyDeleteI also had the same problem with my picture. The picture I have posted is one of my engagement pictures. My fiance, Jordan, is also in the picture with me.
